Scavenging a Classic (Post #550) 12/11/2015

What’s a beautiful girl like you doing in a place like this?

JagGuy, now a new Land Rover owner (he has his and her’s Discoverys), called me and told me there was a, “mostly intact Ranger Rover Classic at Pull-a-Part.” That is a sad and happy thing all in one.

Sad because another Classic is off the road. Happy because it means cheap spares for my Classic. I found out Saturday and went on Sunday afternoon while Mrs. Okierover was napping.

So I jumped in my Classic and headed down to scavenge. What was found was a 1993 Range Rover Classic LWB. Upon first glance I wondered what took her out of service. Her fluids looked good considering. No fire. No wreck. Just done.

So I went about sorting out everthing that was present. The previous scavenger took only a few items. JagGuy was right, very intake.

parts

You can see, I made a haul. Left to right you see:

  • EFI computer
  • EAS computer
  • Mass airflow sensor
  • Both front and back door handles
  • Some interior trim pieces
  • Clock
  • Ground strap
  • Fog lamps
  • Alternator
  • ABS pump
  • Throttle Position Sensor
  • Tail light guards
  • Mint condition package shelf
  • Door trim wood
  • Window ECU

That’s a lot of stuff. Easily a thousand dollars IF you could find the parts. I paid, are you ready, 165$(US). There were several items I’m sure I could have resold. Running boards, seats, a and more.

In would have liked to get the viscous coupling, AC compressor, and the starter. I didn’t have the tools or time. An battery powered impact would have been handy.

As it was I had quite a haul to get out. They have carts to assist. I had to go back and get one after I was done picking. There were none when I first arrived. It’s a long walk to the import section. Its the furthest section in the park.

I’m pretty happy the grab. Two hours of work. The TPS alone is 150$(US). Hopefully at the least the alternator is good to go. That will make a nice spare when the NAPA alternator craps out again.

I did learn that Pull-a-Part is now searchable. If only they had an email notification.

Thanks for reading, and Happy Rovering.

  1. I try to make it a point to go visit any old land rover discoveries / range rover classics in the DFW pick-n-pulls. I set up an alert with the row52 website that emails me whenever a land rover shows up within 100 miles.

    1. It’s free, row52.com is a website that a lot of junkyards are a part of. They post their inventory on there that you can search.
