I’ve found my power steering leak. Leak might not be descriptive enough. Perhaps it is a power steering flow. In any event I have a seal failing. The puddle you see on the frame above is the amount that came out after 3 miles of driving. On the good side all the power steering fluid coating everything has done a fair job of inhibiting rust.

Top Five Most Popular Offroad Parks by State (Post #547) 9/25/2015

The good people at PartCatalog have compiled the 2nd Annual Top Offroad Trails in America. They list the top five places by state. Clint Henderson reached out to me last year for a list of places. The list was wildly successful and they have compiled a new list for 2015.

Being as I am an Okie through and through, you might even say dyed in the wool, I am listing our top five. It looks to me like I need to get my butt out these trails.
Looking at the top three sites nationwide. Two of them are in states bordering our fine state.

I’d like to say thank you to Clint and his team for publishing this again this year. Such a great resource.
Road trip!
Thanks for reading, go check out PartCatalog’s latest list, and Happy Rovering.
Fifth Alternator (Post #546) 9/25/2015
I was on a Facebook page just the other day talking to a fellow about a problem he was having that was related to his alternator. He wanted to know what to buy. He was getting lots of “advice”. I told him I bought a NAPA alternator in 2005 and have replaced it 4 times under warranty.
The economics of that beats buying new every few years. Is it inconvenience when the rebuilt alternator craps out every couple of years? Sure it is. But I don’t pay for them and if I bring it in and say its bad, they replace it no questions asked. They don’t even test it. Continue reading “Fifth Alternator (Post #546) 9/25/2015”
Exhaust Gasket Blow Out (Post #545) 9/21/2015
The Big White Bus started sounding like she was losing a catalytic converter. The sound started as a ticking. However yesterday and today I knew it was a blown exhaust gasket and a missing exhaust stud. I naturally assumed the worst had happened and I would need new exhaust pieces. I was prepared to replace the exhaust starting with the Y. It’s Frankenstein’d together as it is. The next problem or failure is going to require a new exhaust system. I thought that was now. Wiper Arm Assembly Replacement (Post #544) 9/21/2015
This is not a super fun repair. It requires the removal of the bonnet (hood) and the cowling. But every time it rained this year and it was A LOT OF RAIN I watched my wipers go across the wind screen and wondered if the mechanism would hold out until I got home.

You can see from this picture that the support shaft is completely gone. Those are chunks of metal that represented what was once the support shaft carrying the shaft that the wiper arm is connected to.

Organizing the Boot (Post #543) 9/18/2015
The boot of the Big White Bus is a mishmash of bags and lose gear. You can see from this picture that I carry around quite a bit of kit.

In no particular order, mostly because there isn’t really any order in the rear of the vehicle right now, you may find…
- Jumper cables
- Fluids and grease
- Various bits of recovery gear
- Electric air pump
- Bag of tools
- Tire repair kit (won at SCARR 2015)
- Box with toilet paper and sunscreen and bug spray
- Rags
- Blanket
- Spare T-shirt
- Table/package shelf
- Machette
- Spetznaz shovel
